Data Sources
FBI Crime Data 9,000+ Cities
All city safety scores are calculated using official FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) data, which tracks violent and property crimes reported by law enforcement agencies across the nation. This includes data from 9,000+ cities, providing comprehensive coverage of US municipalities.
ZIP Code Coverage 10,000+ ZIPs
ZIP codes are mapped to their primary city and display the city's safety score. This covers ~30% of US residential ZIP codes.
Safety Score Calculation
Our safety scores (1-100) are calculated using a log-scale formula:
- Violent crime rate — murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault (weighted 50%)
- Property crime rate — burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft (weighted 30%)
Formula: 100 - (violent_rate/380×50) - (property_rate/2000×30), clamped between 10-95.
Scores are normalized against national averages. Higher scores = safer areas.
Letter Grades
- A (80-100): Very Safe — well below national crime averages
- B (70-79): Safe — below average crime rates
- C (60-69): Moderate — near national average
- D (50-59): Below Average — above average crime
- F (below 50): High Crime — significantly above average
